The short version: pickup usually happens within 48 hours of booking, or on a later date if you choose one, and the cleaned rug comes back 7–10 business days after pickup. Business days means weekdays, so weekends don't count toward the number. In practice that's somewhere between a week and a half and two weeks of bare floor. The rest of this post is about what that looks like on a calendar and how to plan around it, especially if you're hosting this fall.

What 7–10 business days looks like on a calendar

Say the rug is picked up on Monday, October 19. Seven business days later is Wednesday, October 28. Ten business days later is Monday, November 2. So a Monday pickup typically comes back between Wednesday of the following week and the Monday after that.

Two things follow from that:

  • Weekends stretch it. A Friday pickup and a Monday pickup are only one business day apart, but the Friday one spends an extra weekend away. If the date matters, count weekdays, not days.
  • Plan for the long end. If you need the rug down for something specific, work back ten business days from that date, not seven. If it comes back early, you've lost nothing.

Why a full wash isn't a same-day job

An in-home steam or hot-water extraction cleaning can be done in an afternoon because it only works on the surface of the pile, and the rug stays on your floor to dry. A whole-rug wash is a different thing: the rug goes off-site, where both sides can be treated and rinsed, which is how grit, pet urine and old spills that work down to the base of the fibers get dealt with. The trade-off is drying time. A washed rug has to be dry all the way through before it's rolled up and sent back, because a rug that's rolled while still damp inside can mildew or start to smell, and a dense wool rug holds a lot more water than a thin flatweave.

If you're weighing the two approaches, the rug washing vs. steam cleaning page goes through the differences in more detail.

What can make it take longer

  • Choosing a later pickup date. The 7–10 business days start at pickup, not at booking. If you book on the 1st and pick the 10th for pickup, count from the 10th.
  • Pickup day not working out. If the building needs a certificate of insurance, only allows the service elevator at certain hours, or nobody's home, the clock doesn't start until the rug actually leaves. Sort that out before booking. The pickup prep guide covers what Manhattan high-rises, Jersey City towers and Brooklyn walk-ups tend to ask for.
  • Holidays. Weekday holidays like Thanksgiving can push the return a day or two, since business days are what's being counted.
  • Repair. Fixing holes, eaten patches, edges or fringe is separate from cleaning and is quoted on its own. If a rug needs both, request a quote at easyrugwash.com/rugrepair and ask about timing there rather than assuming it fits in the cleaning window.

Pickup dates to aim for before the holidays

Thanksgiving is Thursday, November 26 this year, Hanukkah starts the evening of Friday, December 4, and Christmas is on a Friday. These dates work back ten business days from a day or two before each holiday, treating Veterans Day and Thanksgiving Thursday and Friday as days that might not count, so there's a little slack built in.

You don't have to book on those exact days. Book whenever it suits you and pick the pickup date in the booking form. Earlier is better, mostly because it gives you room if the first pickup day falls through.

Or send it after the party

If the rug is under the dining table, there's a decent argument for cleaning it after the holiday instead of before. Gravy, cranberry sauce, red wine and a dog working the floor under the table are a lot of what ends up in a dining rug. If something does land on it, the red wine guide covers what to blot with and what to avoid until it's washed, and the stain removal page explains what to put in the order notes. A rug that's only going to see guests' shoes in the living room is a better candidate for a pre-holiday wash.

Living without the rug for two weeks

  • Put felt pads on chair and table legs if they're going to sit on bare hardwood. Dining chairs dragged across an uncovered floor for two weeks will scratch it.
  • Think about older dogs. A senior dog that's used to traction can slip on bare wood or tile. A washable bath mat or a cheap runner in the spots they use most helps until the rug is back.
  • Keep the pad. The pad comes out before the rug is rolled and isn't part of the measured price. Roll it and stand it in a closet. If it's gone flat or crumbly, or it's left marks on the floor, this is the time to replace it.
  • Clean what was underneath. Vacuum or mop the floor and the baseboard gap while it's exposed. Putting a clean rug back down over a layer of grit undoes part of the work.
  • Moving soon? If you're changing addresses inside the return window, ask before you book where the rug can be returned instead of assuming it can follow you.

What it costs for common sizes

Pricing is by the rug's measured area. Pickup and return are free when the cleaning subtotal is $250 or more. Under that, pickup and return are a $50 total fee. If furniture is sitting on the rug, removal and replacement is an optional +$50.
